Zion Narrows
The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah
There is no trail here. The river is the trail. To stand where this was made you walk upstream in the Virgin River itself, ankle deep in places and waist deep in others, with sandstone walls a thousand feet high closing in on both sides.
Light never reaches the bottom directly. It comes down one wall, bounces to the next, and by the time it arrives it is warm and soft and the stone looks lit from inside. The riverbed is the other half of the show, cobbles tumbled smooth by a few million years of flood, holding reds and blues and greys that only show while they are wet.
I set up low so the stones run out ahead of you and carry your eye upstream. Keeping the hiker small is the whole point. It is the only honest way to say how big this canyon is, and it means the one bright thing in a frame of earth colors is a person.
For anyone who has waded upstream just to see what was around the next bend. Printed and finished to gallery standard, made to bring a canyon's worth of warm stone onto a wall. A piece of Zion to keep, from the middle of the river.
