Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon

Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Antelope Canyon was carved by water, but the waterfall in this photograph is made of light. For a few minutes around midday the sun lines up with a narrow crack far above the floor, and a single beam drops through the dark and stands there like something solid.
This is deep inside Upper Antelope Canyon, on Navajo land in Arizona, where flash floods spent thousands of years sculpting the sandstone into waves of ember, rust, and gold. A slot canyon is a strangely quiet place. The stone swallows sound, and all I could hear was sand hissing down through the beam.
A beam like this does not wait for you. It appears, leans slowly across the chamber, and is gone. I stood in the cool sand with my head back and watched until the dust bloomed inside the light exactly right. Everyone who goes leaves with the same thought: you should not be able to touch light, and here you almost can.
For anyone who wants a quiet, glowing center of gravity in a room. Printed and finished to gallery standard, made to warm a wall the way firelight does. A piece of the canyon to keep, long after the beam has moved on.
