Northern Nights

There are two kinds of light in this frame. The green one overhead is the sun's own weather, solar wind pouring into the sky above Alaska. The gold one is just a lamp in a window, and everything a lamp means when you are standing alone in deep snow at night. I made this photograph outside Fairbanks, in the quiet between the two.
Look closer and the scene keeps giving. Snowshoes hung by the door. A roof carrying a winter's worth of snow. Spruce trees loaded white, drifts halfway up the walls, and a sky so clear the stars come through the aurora itself.
Most northern lights photographs are all sky, and the sky alone is a spectacle you watch from a distance. I kept the cabin close on purpose. Without it, this is a picture of the aurora. With it, it is a night you can step inside, kettle on, boots by the stove, the greatest light show on Earth running just past the window.
For anyone with the northern lights still on their list, and for anyone who keeps a soft spot for cabins, snowfall, and being warm while the world is wild outside. The greens glow and the lamplight warms, so it hangs beautifully in bedrooms and dens. Printed and finished to gallery standard. The wildest sky on Earth, with the light left on for you.
