Six million acres of Adirondack forest hit their peak that morning, and one paddler had the good sense to see it from the water. I had my camera high over a river in upstate New York, watching the banks burn orange and red, when a yellow kayak slid quietly into the middle of the frame. I have chased light all over the world. Luck like that almost never shows up.
Straight down is the view nobody on the shore ever gets. The river runs almost black, so every tree doubles in intensity against it. Reds you would swear were painted, silver branches where the leaves have already let go, and dead center, one small human being having the best morning of their October.
The kayak is what makes this more than a picture of pretty trees. It gives the forest its scale, and it gives you a place to sit. Everyone who looks at this print does the same thing, they put themselves in that boat. That is why it hangs so well in living rooms and offices, it is a daily reminder that the calm is out there waiting.
