Honu

Honu

Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

This is two photographs in one, and the line across the middle is the only thing keeping them apart. Above it, the Kona coast doing exactly what you picture. Below it, the part almost nobody sees.
Two honu came through the shallows while I was half in and half out of the water, waiting for the swell to settle enough to hold the horizon steady. Green sea turtles are protected here and they seem to know it. These two came close, took their time, and never once changed course for me.
A split shot is mostly patience and arithmetic. The lens has to sit exactly at the surface, the top half needs bright sky while the bottom half takes whatever light makes it down there, and one wave at the wrong moment ruins the line. I kept shooting until a pass gave me both turtles clear of each other, one in profile, the palms unbroken behind them.
For anyone who has snorkeled off the Big Island and come up grinning. Printed and finished to gallery standard, made to put that turquoise into a bedroom, a bathroom, or a hallway that needs an ocean in it. A piece of Kona to keep, both halves of it.
