Black Sand Beach
Hana, Maui
The Road to Hana is 600 curves and 50 one-lane bridges, and most people turn around before it ends. Keep going and the pavement finally runs out here, at a black sand beach the island mostly keeps to itself.
This is straight down. Volcanic black sand, the surf coming apart over it in white lace, and a line of palms holding the green edge of the rainforest. The sand is lava, ground down by the same ocean that is breaking across it. Nothing here was planted or placed. It is Maui doing what it has done for a few million years, seen from directly above.
I flew this at the very end of the road, where Hana lets go and the coast turns wild. One of those frames you only earn by driving farther than everyone else.
For anyone who made it to the end of the Hana road, or wants to. Printed and finished to gallery standard, made to bring the wild side of Maui home and keep it on the wall.
