Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco

Fog over the Golden Gate is the postcard everyone has. Fog under it is the rare one. On the right morning the bank rolls in low and the whole span ends up floating on top of the cloud, with just the north tower breaking through into clear light.
I shot this from a helicopter banking over the tower, the early sun throwing its shadow a quarter mile across the fog like a second bridge laid down in cloud. Traffic still crawling along the deck, the cables fanning down into the white, the bay barely showing underneath. A few minutes later the fog burned off and it was just another clear day.
The most photographed bridge in the world, from an angle almost no one gets: the fog beneath it instead of over it, and a shadow that only lines up for a few minutes when the light is low. Printed and finished to gallery standard, made to put San Francisco's best morning on your wall every day.
