Sunset Over Los Angeles

The best skies in Los Angeles come after the sun is already gone. Stay a few minutes longer than everyone else and the whole thing turns red and gold.
Downtown stands in clean silhouette while the sky overhead runs from deep crimson to molten orange to a thin band of pure gold at the horizon. Palm trees rise in the foreground, the city lights begin to wake underneath, and for a few minutes the most ordinary evening in the world looks like the end of an era.
I waited out the sunset and kept shooting after the sun dropped, when most people had already packed up. That is when the color built. The afterglow only lasts a few minutes before it fades to blue, and on the rare evenings it goes this deep, there is nothing else like it anywhere.
